I certainly agree that Curry hasn't played nearly as well as people seem to think -- as I've blathered about elsewhere, CJ's outplaying him by a country mile. But what is your prescription based on this? Is your contention that we should trade him, or just that people should stop acting like he's been good?
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that we kind of have to hope that he gets better. Monta's not a point guard, and the more we pretend otherwise, the worse we do; CJ made it crystal-clear this summer that he's leaving as soon as possible (not that you can blame him). Curry's gotta be the guy for the foreseeable future. Overhyped yes, disappointing so far, yes; if you want to say we should've taken Jennings or Lawson instead, I'll be the first to agree with you. But he's our point guard of the future, for better or worse.
I launched the CJ > Curry boat. Credit.
ReplyDeleteCurry's trade value peaked at a one year Amar'e rental. He's not a franchise centerpiece. At all. Use him for the Maggette dump.
Eh. Probably not a centerpiece, but I'd rather use one of the expirings, or maybe Wright, to try to dump Maggette instead. And I say that as a Wright fan. It's worth waiting a while to see if Curry can become credible. We could really use a point guard.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I was not aware of any CJ > Curry boats being launched... just came upon this site today. Credit is all yours if you want it.
ReplyDeleteWright's play last year was excellent but he also got his minutes dicked around a ton. Don't be a mini-sucker there. He's a better pro than Curry, hands down, career. Curry's not a point guard- worst in the league among rookie PGs and H2H wrecked by later picks Lawson and Holiday so far. And he's already 21 (ss in March, I believe). It's an old rookie class, as I've written about, but he was expected to be something he is not and will not be.
ReplyDeleteCJ ain't hot shit but he's outperformed Curry handily and EARNED the rotation precedence over the rook. Now it's just academic, so I'm glad you're on top of it, too. I like your blog often.
Thanks for the kind words... I am digging your blog, as well. And I agree that Wright's a better player than Curry by a good bit. Wright is easily the most underrated player on the team and one of the most underrated players in the league... when healthy, I think he would make an above-average starting four. Nellie's refusal to play him last year was stupefying.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, Wright's shoulder situation is worrisome, and Randolph's rebounding edge makes him the higher-upside guy. Curry is more likely to find a starting job available here than Wright is. I also think Wright has more trade value than Curry, for two reasons:
1) As you have ably been pointing out, just about every team in the league has a point guard who's better than Curry currently is. Looking up and down NBA rosters, it seems like Curry would help the Knicks, maybe the Grizzlies; not sure who else. And if you try to sell him as a two (which, I agree, he may unfortunately be), he's even less appealing. It's hard to see many teams really dreaming on him. Conversely, there are a number of teams who would dream on a long and efficient big man.
2) Curry's trade value nosedives as soon as it's clear he's available. Who was the last high pick to be traded during their rookie year? The last one I can remember is Donyell, and he sorta proves the point: if you're offering a rookie shortly after drafting him, teams will know you think he sucks.
One more variable: the PG free agents available this summer fuckin' stink, with a bunch of Felton and Alston topping the list. The best value guy might actually be CJ, and while I do like CJ, he's 1) not necessarily a PG himself and 2) shown a pretty distinct interest in not re-signing here. If we punted on Curry, maybe CJ would stay, but I don't see that being worth the risk.
It's a bad situation we're in with Curry. He's been ineffective, and nobody in the organization, the media or even the fanbase seems to realize it. That is, without question, a problem. But I think our best move to sit tight and hope he figures a couple things out. If he starts shooting more, he can be, if not a great point guard, a bit more useful than he's been.
Curry was the wrong pick. Warriors aren't sitting tight they're just stuck with a stupid draft pick. Ellis is more important and Curry's in his way.
ReplyDeleteCC's Curry hate is interesting. Anybody know why? Here are Curry's stat positions vs all rookies and rookie guards thru Dec 17:
ReplyDeleteScoring: 5th and 4th
Rebounds: 13th and 4th
FG% 12th and 3rd
FT% 4th and 3rd
3Pt% 3rd and 2nd
Assts 3rd and 3rd
Steals 1st and 1st
Blocks 9th and 1st
Minutes 3rd and 3rd
Turnovers 4th and 4th
Since he was drafted 6th (excluding Rubio) and 4th among guards, it looks like he stacks up pretty good, especially given that it must have been pretty hard to come into an organization like Golden State as a rookie this year.
Bruce AGAIN? Curry's got some cumulative stats still holding up that the PR guys have to cling to since he LOOKS like total shit and gets smoked by every rookie PG he matches up against (Holiday, Lawson, etc. thus far). He got benched in NY for NO REASON besides the hype and the "hate." Kid's in over his head and the team has to lie through their teeth about Randolph (thank god Wright's hurt, frankly!) to cover up their miss on Curry. All those shitty garbage time stats while the team gets torched, meanwhile his December gets worse and worse.
